The Senior Grand Masters fielded two sides against Australia’s Southern Cross on Tuesday 18th June in Oxford – Over 70s and Over 75s, with England LX fielding sides at Over 60s, Over 65s and Over 80s. On Wednesday 19th, Southern Cross played full England sides in all five age groups before playing in the international tournament in the Hague from June 24th to 30th.
The Over 70s had one or two chances to score in the first half without success and held Southern Cross until shortly after half time when SX went one nil up. The SGM continued to press for an equaliser with several more chances in the second half before SX went two nil up making the final score 0-2.
The Over 75s fared much better on the other pitch and won comfortably 3-1 with the first goal scored by Arthur Creswell. Tom Carney soon added a second and this was followed up by a third from Roland Mear with Southern Cross gaining a solitary consolation goal.
The Australians complimented us on our standard of hockey but agreed the England matches the next day would be even more challenging!
